New Phase for Campaign Which Has Planted Over 12 Billion Trees Worldwide

YEREVAN--Heavy snow and rapidly decreasing temperatures presented an added challenge to Armenia Tree Project (ATP) programs this fall. Despite a temporary delay in northern Armenia until the weather cleared, ATP was able to plant a total of 87,143 trees this season.

Nairobi, 26 September 2011 - Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, founder of Kenya's Green Belt Movement and patron of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Billion Tree Campaign, has died in Nairobi. She was 71 years old. 

2 September  2011 – The Johannesburg Zoo, with 500 school learners in attendance, planted three indigenous trees to mark Arbor Day. They were joined by the Miss Earth organization, Grow-a-Tree, Food and Trees for Africa, Sci-Bono and Rand Water.  These organisations gave talks about the importance of trees and provided with tips on how to plant trees correctly.

20 June 2011 – With the fieldwork and scientific analysis completed for UNEP’s environmental assessment of oil contamination in Ogoniland, Nigeria, members of the UNEP project team arranged tree planting events with children from eight local schools

The World Environment Day 2011 was marked at 1st Avenue Park, Gwarimpa Estate with the planting of 250 palm trees. Organisers of the event, Global Awareness for Development Initiatives (GLADi) in collaboration with Federal Housing Authority (FHA) used the event to kick start the initiative to plant 5000 trees at Gwarimpa estate.

23 May 2011 Hackettstown N.J., - Representatives from Verizon Wireless, along with Centenary College students and faculty, planted blue spruce saplings together on the New Jersey-based campus. Centenary College was one of five institutions nationally that was chosen to receive a 200-sapling donation as a result of the College’s ongoing initiatives related to Earth Day and sustainability.
